Nancy Velez achieved a significant competitive milestone at age 12 in the 1991 New England Figure Skating Championships, where she placed 1^st in the freestyle event, and 3^rd overall in the Novice Ladies event representing the Colonial Figure Skating Club. This podium finish followed her earlier success at the 1989 Bay State Winter Games, where she won in her first-ever novice competition. She then went on to compete in the Eastern Sectional Championship where she placed 3^rd overall and qualified to compete in the 1991 US Figure Skating Championships held in Minneapolis, MN. With Olympic coaches Evy and Mary Scotvold she competed along side her fellow training partners Paul Wylie (Olympic Silver Medalist) and Nancy Kerrigan (Olympic Silver Medalist). Nancy was best known for her extremely high floating double lutz, and artistic grace. Along with her Olympic coaches and fellow skaters from all over the US, she trained with Evy & Mary Scotvold in Vail, Colorado and at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO during the summer months.
